Torn between staying and leaving

Hermann Hesse felt both affection and hurt about his home town Calw in the Black Forest. The lady in the local Hesse museum was excited about the few visitors of the day and joyfully shared interesting details about the author’s relationship with the city. Even though many people disliked Hesse during his lifetime, he could always count on friends in the town who, ultimately, raised this monument for him.
